Home Hair Color Update!

My palms are sweaty and I am having some mild panic attacks. Lu needs her hair colored for the play. Dark Red. Her hair is normally a brownish reddish color. We have colored it before. We have never done this at home before.

I bought Clairol Natural Instincts in Cinnaberry color which is a medium auburn brown.

Anyone done this before? Am I crazy? Should I not do this? Make an appointment at a real salon? Or is it really not that big of a deal?

UPDATE:
I am VERY pleased to report that this was SO not a big deal whatsoever! I don't know the last time I was so nervous about doing something...but it was so easy. And the color is a truly gorgeous red...and she LOVES it!

Not that big of a deal!! I dye my own hair all the time and get compliments all the time. When I got it done professionally, NO-ONE commented!! hehehe!

It's not a big deal, says the queen of changing her hair color at home. But don't just plop it on the top of her head and mush it! Take care to comb the hair in sections, apply it close to the roots, next section, apply, next etc etc. Then apply it to the rest of the hair until the whole head is done. I like Loreal best of all, but I've tried them all; and Natural Instincts is a good brand. Good luck!

I color my own hair--but I use & love Revlon's Colorsilk.

If you don't like the color, or want to tone it down, just wash your hair with dish soap.

My daughter colors her hair all the time herself. It always looks nice!
Good Luck!

It should be fine. I used to do mine, now I go to a beauty school and get it done for about what it cost just to buy the dye at the store.

OH, I am SO 'out of the loop'!

'Forty two and never colored my hair...'
(Could be a movie title??!)

GOOD LUCK - just sounds like a LOT of work! How old is Lu?

Go for it! I have friends and relatives who dye their hair at home all the time, and it looks fab. Good luck!

It's easy! Do it one time and you'll be hooked. Everyone I know colors their hair at home, unless they are doing highlights. Now that one I wouldn't try!

You know what?? I am going to DO THIS! I CAN DO THIS!

Thanks so much for the encouragement, I will be sure to post some pics of the results which I am CERTAIN will turn out fabulous. (And maybe pics of us at the colorist's trying to salvage, haha)

Svelte...Lu is 12. We have put light colors and a few highlights in her hair since she was about 9 or so. I am VERY easy going when it comes to color (with a professional, obviously!) but it is just color which never freaks me out. Now, if she wants a perm? NOOOOOOOO...not on my watch:)

Loreal makes a semi-permanent color that washes out in 8-10 shampoos. We used it for Halloween and it was great, it's called Color Pulse and is a mousse. Just an idea if you don't want it to be permanent. Otherwise, go for it! Follow the directions carefully and it'll look great! Helen

I was going to add in that you might want to look for temporary hair color, like Helen suggested. Otherwise, she is going to ave red hair for at least two months. Good luck with everything.

(And, yes I color my hair at home. Easy Peasey.)

Natural Instincts is good! Lasts through a number of shampoos so just shampoo a lot if you want it out faster :) Easy to do!

p.s. Loved your costume finds!

Well, looks like this is a done deal. I can add that, yes I dye my own hair on a regular basis. However, when I was in my early 20's I thought about going back to my "natural" color. That was a DISASTER! I picked a shade too dark and had to go to a stylist friend to have it fixed. She said that was a common mistake people make. FYI-Just in case Lu wants to go back to her natural color.
